Hi, Everyone!
My name is Zoey Peake and Peake Yoga is my website.
FINDING YOGA
I took my first yoga class about fifteen years ago during a summer dance intensive and enjoyed the strength building and focus needed for it but didn’t stick with it at first. A few years later, I had to quit ballet due to a repetitive stress injury. It was my junior year of high school and I was devastated. I didn’t know how I would ever find a form of physical activity that I would enjoy as much as dance again.
While in college, I found time for exercise classes here and there, always gravitating to yoga, but I wasn’t in love yet and didn’t have the time or the money to make a commitment to a practice. Once I graduated, I began taking yoga classes with my mom at the local community center. The classes weren’t too difficult, but I was moving again. I loved that for each pose, everyone could make it their own — too tired? Go into child’s pose. Can’t reach your foot? Use a strap. I found in yoga there is no shame about it because each day our bodies are different and we are all built differently. So something that is easy for one person may not be easy for another.
In conjunction with the community class, I also tested out a bunch of yoga phone applications so I could expand my practice at home and on the go. This made a huge difference for me because sometime you don’t have fifteen minutes to do yoga let alone an hour. Over the next few years I built up my practice so I was doing yoga five to six days a week. I was strong and found yoga was also good at calming my mind from anxiety and stress.
A year ago I became ill and did not know why. I could no longer do fifteen minutes of yoga or walk my dog. I would sleep nine to twelve hours and wake up exhausted. After working with doctors and diagnosing my illness, I started to gain back some strength and when I did, yoga was there. I wasn’t strong and I couldn’t practice well or long at first, but I could still practice. And it made a difference. The more I practiced, the better I felt, the stronger I became, the quicker I seemed to heal. I’m not saying yoga is magical and will heal all your ailments, but I know from experience that in conjunction with proper treatment, it is a great way to exercise your body while also calming your mind so that you are renewed everyday.
If you haven’t tried yoga before, I highly recommend trying it. You don’t have to take class from me, but find a class that you can take once or twice a week for a month and see if you don’t start to feel a little bit better, stronger, looser, clearer. Perhaps you won’t worry as much about your job while you are playing with your kids. Or maybe you will sleep a little better. Or it could just get you off your couch so you do something other than Netflix and chill. Just see if it does something for you.
WHAT YOU WILL FIND AT PEAKE YOGA
